Jon M. and Karen Huntsman Basketball Facility, University of Utah
Honor the past, Train the future
Infinite Scale acted as the branding and signage designer for the Jon M. and Karen Huntsman Basketball Facility. We worked collaboratively with the coaches of both teams to develop a sophisticated and restrained branding program that integrated seamlessly into the designs of the architect, Populous, and interior designer, Elliot Workgroup.
A primary focus of this project was the recruiting path and associated stories encountered along the way. Whether history, UofU players in the NBA, local culture or Coaches Krystkowiak/Roberts’ inspirational mantras, each story was defined and refined prior to design process to ensure a cohesive story was told. We worked with the staff to understand how they planned to bring recruits through the new facility in order to develop that pathway into a memorable experience. The entry atrium, or Kem and Carolyn Gardner Legacy Hall, is the initial stop on the path where you are surrounded by the greats of Utah Basketball. Key games and players are supersized and illuminated on the walls, while players with retired jerseys glow as they hang from the ceiling. After the Legacy Hall, the focus shifts to the future of the program. The player areas, including practice gyms, film rooms, lounges and locker rooms incorporate team words and quotes to motivate the student-athletes that study, train and play there.
Training centers are especially exciting to work on because branding exists everywhere – from the Block U door handles to a thirty-foot Drum and Feather in the Legacy Hall. No matter where you are in the building, you know that you are in Utah Basketball territory. It has been exciting to witness how the new facility has already elevated the status of Utah Basketball within both the Pac-12 and the national landscapes.
